Embedding Sustainable Practice

For the first time in our Group’s history, we have invested in state-of-the-art machinery that delivers greater accuracy, faster production, and enhanced sustainability. These machines allow us to capture and manage waste at even the smallest levels, enabling us to operate with genuine circular economy principles.

Our QuayTherm doors embody this philosophy: they can even be produced from waste off-cuts collected directly from our customers’ sites, with ribbed panels transformed into high-performing door blades.

Project Acorn

QuayTherm is part of The P & M Group and plays an integral part in delivering its sustainability strategy Project Acorn. The Group is committed to not only embed best practices within our own operations but influence the wider industry in making more responsible and ethical choices. We must work collaboratively with our stakeholders to reduce negative impacts and embrace regenerative thinking.

Sustainability within Quaytherm

The P & M Group has been working in partnership with specialist sustainability consultancy Wylde Connections since 2022 to develop and implement a Sustainability Strategy, Action Plan and Road Map. From calculating emissions to working with our supply chain to reduce waste, we are working hard to drive positive change. We have set out ambitious targets and key milestones, including the internal appointment and promotion of Group Sustainability Manager Joanne Swift PIEMA who is responsible for driving and managing our interventions to maintain the momentum.

Supporting the circular economy

Central to that sustainability strategy is an impetus to explore new business models and practices that treat the planet as a key stakeholder. As The P & M Group’s manufacturing arm, QuayTherm is ideally placed to break new ground in sustainable production.

To reduce waste, minimise emissions and combat the climate crisis, we must take a new approach to resource management. The circular economy is all about keeping resources in the value chain – the  full lifecycle of a product or process, including sourcing materials, manufacturing, consumption and disposal or recycling.  QuayTherm is supporting this transition by developing a unique process of manufacturing new doors from the waste generated by cold store installations. Discarded panels are reengineered and reused to make a range of hinged and sliding doors. What was once consigned to a skip as waste is now reused to create sustainable products that allow our customers to make more responsible choices.

We had circularity in mind right from the outset. During the product development journey, we used the latest 3D printing technology for efficient prototyping and developed a production process that prioritises waste reduction. Panel cut-offs and dust generated during manufacturing are taken up by our new extraction system before being collected in bags and sent to be recycled.

Manufactured in the UK – Promoting sustainable supply chains

QuayTherm is committed to working closely with suppliers who share our sustainability values around emissions reduction and responsible resource management. We also made the conscious decision to stand out from our competitors by insisting that the vast majority of our supply chain is UK based. This not only gives us greater control over quality but significantly reduces our carbon footprint.

Our supplier Kingspan manufactures the insulated panels used in QuayTherm doors. The business has very efficient production lines, and its new LEC panel alternative demonstrates a significant reduction in embodied carbon for a typical thickness of 100mm.

Aligned with the principles of Project Acorn, we have formed a partnership with one of the largest aluminium suppliers in the U.K who use a state of the art smelting process guaranteeing that our aluminium components will always comprise of a minimum of 60% recycled content. Any waste generated during production is collected and returned to their UK facility to be processed into new billets of aluminium.

Similarly, we source plastic composite parts from a UK supplier which manufactures and melts its own PVC and other components. It has full control over raw materials and QuayTherm returns most of the waste to be recycled and reused in future production – circularity in action.

Supporting cold stores on the path to Net Zero

The cold store sector is seeking sustainable choices as it works to help the UK meet its Net Zero 2050 target. At QuayTherm we are determined to support businesses large and small to reduce their carbon footprint, drive efficiencies and put better resource management at the heart of their decision making.
